Teenage Engineering, the Swedish electronics design brand behind iconic products like the OP-1 synthesizer and the OB-4 speaker, is shifting gears – literally. Known for its innovative, minimalist design language and cult-favorite gadgets, the company has collaborated with fellow Swedish brand Vässla to create the EPA-1, a stylish, customizable electric moped that blends modern tech with urban mobility.
From first glance, the influence of Teenage Engineering is unmistakable. The EPA-1 features a clean, pared-back frame with a futuristic aesthetic that still feels approachable and playful. It’s a modular platform designed to evolve with its rider. Built into the body are multiple mounting points and screw holes, inviting users to personalize the moped with accessory plates, gear racks, and creative add-ons. These panels aren’t simply painted either – they’re made from fully pigmented materials, so scratches won’t reveal bare metal.
The name “EPA-1” itself is a nod to inclusivity and versatility, deriving from the Swedish phrase “En Passar Alla,” which means “One Fits All.” That sentiment is baked into every element of the moped’s design, from its adaptable exterior to its forward-thinking tech.
Speaking of tech, the EPA-1 is packed with smart features. It includes integrated front and rear LED lights for visibility, and the onboard battery comes with a USB port for charging phones or other devices on the go. Bluetooth connectivity links the moped to an app, unlocking features like keyless ignition via smartphone. Prefer old-school keys? There’s a traditional ignition option too.
Performance-wise, the EPA-1 is built for urban commuting. It’s equipped with a 2,600W electric motor and offers two ride modes: 45 km/h (28 mph) for road use and 25 km/h (15.5 mph) for bike path travel. Riders can choose between two battery options – one that delivers a 60 km (37 mi) range and another that extends up to 100 km (62 mi), making it ideal for everyday travel within the city.
In a departure from traditional moped ownership models, Vässla is introducing a battery leasing system for the EPA-1. Buyers will own the moped itself, but lease the battery, allowing them to upgrade as new battery tech becomes available. It’s a future-focused approach that aligns well with the EPA-1’s overall ethos of flexibility and long-term adaptability.
The Vässla EPA-1 was originally sold in a stealth Black finish, but now it also comes in Blue, Vit, Red, and Yellow.
