A little over a week ago, a T-Mobile employee made a post on Reddit in which they warned that layoffs were coming. T-Mobile later issued a statement to us which acknowledged they were “making some changes” but are “continuing to hire.” Well, turns out the Reddit post wasn’t wrong after all. According to a filing with the state Employee Security Department, T-Mobile is conducting a series of layoffs at its headquarters in Washington.
393 T-Mobile employees will be laid off from HQ
Based on the filing, it seems that a total of 393 T-Mobile employees are part of the layoffs at the carrier’s headquarters. A report from GeekWire has revealed that more than 200 different job titles are affected, including analysts, engineers, and technicians. It also affects higher-ups, such as directors and managers.
As of December 2024, T-Mobile has about 70,000 people working for them. These layoffs will account for less than 1% of that. However, it also means that close to 400 people will soon be out of a job.
Based on a WARN filing submitted to the state and signed by Monica Frohock, who is the senior director of the Magenta Service Center, “These facilities are not being closed. The layoffs are not due to relocation or contracting out employer operations or employee positions, but it is possible that some work currently done by these employees may at some point be done by others.”
Layoffs in the industry: T-Mobile is not alone
That being said, T-Mobile is not the only carrier cutting jobs. Last November, Verizon also laid off about 13,000 of its employees in Washington. But this is also part of a larger event that is affecting the tech industry.
Since 2025, we’ve noticed that there are a growing number of tech companies that are conducting layoffs. We’re talking about industry giants like Intel, Apple, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft, just to name a few.
There are many reasons behind these layoffs. It could have been due to overhiring during the pandemic. It could also be due to the Trump administration’s tariffs, which could result in companies being forced to pay more tax for their imports. And it could also be due to the rise of AI. More companies are discovering that AI can easily replace the roles of some of their human employees.
It is worrying to see this happen, but as they say, when one door closes, another opens.
