On my quest to help families find that “just right” ski lodging—not too pricey, not too basic—I landed at the newly renovated Sun Lodge in Peru, Vermont. This spot checks all the boxes: ski-in/ski-out convenience, fresh modern design, and an approachable price point. Bromley Mountain has long been a favorite of mine, and with Sun Lodge’s stylish revamp, families finally have a comfy, affordable place to stay right on the mountain.
Why Bromley?
Bromley Mountain is a hidden gem among Vermont ski areas. Founded in 1936 by the Pabst family (yes, of the beer empire), it’s one of the few independent ski resorts left in the state. It’s beloved for its family-friendly vibe, well-run ski school, and reasonable lift ticket prices—day passes hover around $100, with solid deals on multi-day tickets.

Bromley At a Glance
- Base Elevation: Highest in Vermont at 1,950 feet
- Summit: 3,284 feet
- Vertical Drop: 1,334 feet
- Lifts: 9 total, including a high-speed quad
- Snowmaking: 86% coverage
- Trail Breakdown: Beginner 32%, Intermediate 37%, Advanced 31%
Bromley is perfect for families, with a well-designed learning area and some of the best glade skiing in Vermont. But it also faces stiff competition from big-budget neighbors like Okemo (Vail Resorts) and Stratton (Alterra). Those resorts have deep pockets for fancy new lifts, lodges, and high-end amenities. Bromley, on the other hand, stays true to its roots: friendly, low-key, and focused on the skiing.

Enter Sun Lodge: A Long Overdue Update
For over 50 years, the Sun Lodge has welcomed skiers looking for an easy, slopeside stay. The location was always a win—sitting right next to the Kids’ Carpet bunny slope—but the lodge itself desperately needed a refresh. Enter Saltaire Hotels and Migis Hotel Group, who have brought new life to this classic ski lodge while keeping it cozy, unfussy, and budget-friendly.
From the outside, the lodge still sports its Austrian-style village charm. But step inside, and you’ll notice the transformation immediately. The lobby now feels warm, welcoming, and stylishly modern. New furniture and lighting give it an upgraded yet relaxed feel. The library area is stocked with a mix of bestsellers, children’s books, and photography from Vermont artist Caleb McKenna. It’s the perfect spot to unwind by the fireplace with a complimentary tea after a long ski day.
A small but well-curated gift shop sits in the lobby, featuring local artisan pieces and practical items (like windshield wiper fluid—clearly, a skier had a hand in that decision).

The Rooms: Clean, Modern, and Family-Friendly
After check-in, you’ll head upstairs to your room. The only thing that still feels old-school is the tiny elevator. Otherwise, the updates shine. The decor is fresh and minimal, with a Scandinavian-inspired aesthetic—think clean lines, mid-century furnishings, and plenty of natural light. It’s a welcome departure from the oversized, clunky furniture often found in Vermont inns.
Practical touches make a difference, too. Plenty of hooks, fluffy towels, and ample outlets ensure a hassle-free stay for ski families. And the WiFi? Lightning-fast.

Ski-In/Ski-Out Perks
Mornings at Sun Lodge are seamless. You can get ready in the slopeside ski lodge, boot up, and head straight to the lifts. If you’re a beginner, skiing down to the base area is easy. More advanced? Head straight to the Sun Mountain Express for quick access to the summit.
At the end of the day, ski right back to the lodge, where a fire pit usually crackles outside, welcoming you as you unclip your bindings. Skis and boards can be stored in the dedicated storage room (no hauling them to your room), and then it’s time for a warm shower and some downtime.

Family-Friendly Extras
The downstairs game area is a huge perk for families. With ping pong, pool, a gaming station, and space to spread out, it’s a great way to keep the kids entertained. One of my favorite details? The complimentary washer and dryer—perfect for handling those inevitable damp ski clothes.

Dining at Bromley
The lodge’s signature restaurant, The Trailhead, is a fantastic addition, offering elevated comfort food with a view. The menu features dishes like:
- Tortellini with cauliflower, squash, and pesto cream
- Statler Chicken Breast with broccolini and goat cheese polenta
- Shepherd’s Pie with onion-tomato gravy and whipped potatoes
Unfortunately, I visited midweek (Monday–Wednesday), when the restaurant was closed. For those looking to dine out, Gringo Jack’s (Mexican) and Season’s (elevated American) are my top picks in Manchester. You can check out more of my picks for “Where to Eat in Manchester, VT” here.
In the morning, Sun Lodge provides a simple grab-and-go breakfast, including breakfast sandwiches, cereal, coffee, and tea. We opted for a quick espresso run to Charlie’s in Manchester, but if you’re eager to hit the slopes, the on-site options work well.

The People Make the Difference
The staff at Sun Lodge was incredibly welcoming and helpful. However, I do have one small disappointment to share—my friend lost her anniversary necklace during our stay, and despite some investigation, it never turned up. The front desk team was kind and thorough, but unfortunately, no luck. That said, it doesn’t take away from the otherwise wonderful experience.
