Spotify is finally making it easier to share audiobook access in the US. With the launch of its new Audiobooks+ plan, Spotify shared audiobook access with more users by letting US-based Family and Duo plan members join in on the fun. Prior to this, audiobooks were limited to individual Premium subscribers, but this new feature changes that.
Spotify brings shared audiobook access to the US
Before this, only the main Spotify Premium account holder could access audiobooks. Users would get 15 hours worth of listening time each month. However, with the new Audiobooks+ plan, that changed. Now, users can fork out an additional $11.99 per month for an extra 15 hours of audiobook time.Â
The best part is that this new Spotify shared audiobook plan for the US extends that listening time with others on their Family or Duo plan. This new plan has already been available in select markets like the UK, Australia, and parts of Europe. But now, Spotify Premium+ subscribers in the US get to enjoy this feature too.Â
Spotify says that once the add-on is purchased, plan members just need to request access from the account manager. The main user can also buy one-time 10-hour top-ups if the family runs out of hours before the month resets. However, do take note that this is separate from the $9.99 Spotify Audiobooks Access plan. It cannot be purchased by non-Premium users.
It’s a welcome update for audiobook fans who live in the same household. Plus, it gives families more flexibility to explore books together or individually without paying for multiple subscriptions.
No price hike in the US
Spotify recently raised prices in several other countries. But thankfully, users in the US were spared (for now). Instead of rolling out a price increase, Spotify expanded its shared audiobook access. Whether the extra 15 hours is worth the $12 a month depends on your audiobook habits. But for households already on Duo or Family plans, this could be a useful and flexible upgrade.Â
Audiobooks are a great alternative to traditional books or ebooks. They’re perfect for listening to when you’re working out or on the drive to work since you can access the app on your phone. Spotify says it plans to experiment with more options for books in the future. This could include direct sales.
