While Sony’s smartphone business isn’t quite what it once was, the company still has its foot in the industry. The company supplies a lot of smartphone makers with camera sensors. In fact, Sony makes some of the best camera sensors in the market today. Now, thanks to a report from Digital Chat Station, the specs of the Sony IMX09E 200MP camera sensor has leaked.
Sony IMX09E 200MP camera sensor specs leak
According to the tipster, the Sony IMX09E is rumored to be a 200MP camera sensor. In fact, it could very well be the same sensor that Samsung could use for its Galaxy S26 Ultra. Sony is reportedly positioning its new sensor above the Lytia LYT-900, its previous flagship sensor.
It is a 1/1.12-inch type sensor with 0.7μm native pixel size. It is also built on the 22nm process and supports features like Hybrid Frame HDR, 100dB+ ultra high dynamic range, and better photosensitvity. Lastly, is also rumored to support both 2x and 4x full-pixel fusion “lossless” zoom.
All this is to say that the sensor will come with a bunch of improvements that phones should be able to take advantage of. However, we should note that hardware is really just one part of the story. The computational software matters as well. This is why back when companies were churning out phones with dual cameras, Google’s single camera phone still outperformed most of them due to Google’s imaging algorithms.
Also, in addition to the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra, the Oppo Find X9 Ultra will be using the sensor. There are rumors suggesting that Vivo might also use it in the X300 Ultra. However, we’ll have to wait and see. Meanwhile, Xiaomi might actually not use it for the Xiaomi 16 Ultra.
Give us bigger sensors
That being said, while having a 200MP sensor is nice on paper, we honestly would much prefer seeing larger sensors. Xiaomi and Sony actually partnered up for a 1-inch sensor in Xiaomi’s earlier phones. However, since then, we haven’t really seen too many phone makers adopt that technology.
A larger sensor is beneficial because it lets in more light. That in turn will improve the details of photos and videos. That could actually have more tangible benefits rather than photos with higher resolution. Especially since most photos we share tend to be viewed on smaller screens anyway.
