Sony is once again implementing a price increase for the PS5 console, making this the second time Sony has upped the price in the US in the past couple of years. Sony is also raising the price of its PlayStation console across in other regions, including the UK, Europe, and Japan, as this is a global adjustment. That means that European consumers are dealing with what seems like their third price jump the PS5 in total since it launched.
For all the jokes about the PS5’s price being as high as the PS3, only to have it launch at $499, we’re now at a place where those jokes have become reality, and the joke is no longer funny. In the US, Sony will increase the price of the PS5 console to $649.99, up from $549.99. The PS5 Digital Edition is going up to $599.99, up from $499.99. In other words, a $100 increase. Price jumps will be about the same globally, in each region’s respective currencies.
The PS5 Pro console is also getting a price increase
Sadly, the PS5 Pro is not getting a pass on the more expensive price tag this time around. When Sony raised prices on the PS5 to $549.99 in the US the first time, the Pro model was able to skate by without being noticed. This time, Sony isn’t being so kind. The PS5 Pro was already fairly expensive at $799.99. Keep in mind this is a fully digital console, and the disc drive attachment is an extra $80. Once prices go up for the consoles, the PS5 Pro will be increasing to $899.99, so it’ll be about $980 just to have a PS5 Pro that plays physical games.
But, it doesn’t stop there. Sony is also increasing the price of the PlayStation Portal handheld. This will go up from $199.99 to $249.99. Sony doesn’t give a very detailed answer as to why the prices are going up. Only stating that pressures in the economic landscape have caused them to come to a decision on increasing prices. That being said, it’s highly likely that this is a result of a few key factors. Most notably, or at least recently, because of the supply shortage on components like RAM and storage. Sony says these price changes will start on April 2, so if you wanted any of this hardware, now is the time buy it.
And now that Sony no longer plans to release PlayStation games on PC, you’ll need a console to play those exclusives.
