Sony and TCL have announced new details regarding their home entertainment partnership which will see both companies enter into a joint venture to form a TV and home entertainment business under the Bravia brand. Sony is one of the major players currently in the Google TV and Android TV landscape. Back at the end of January, both companies had announced plans to enter into this partnership with an understanding that products coming from it would assume the Bravia brand name. Some details from that memorandum were announced, but today’s announcement clarifies that agreements have now been signed.
Sony confirms that TCL will assume a 51% stake in the new company while it will assume a 49% stake. Additionally, Sony will transfer 100% of the equity in Sony EMCS (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd to TCL. Snoy is also expected to transfer the equity in Shanghai Suoguang Visual Products Co., Ltd. to TCL, but discussions are still being had regarding how much equity will be transferred. Sony says it could end up being all or part of the equity. Both companies are subsidiaries that handle the manufacturing function of Sony’s home entertainment products.
The Sony-TCL TV business is planned to be called Bravia Inc.
Both Sony and TCL appear to have worked out several details of the partnership including a company name, though it should be noted that a name does not appear to have been finalized at this time. According to Sony’s announcement, the joint company venture is planned to be called Bravia Inc., which would fit well in keeping continuity with the brand name.
Sony and TCL already confirmed that products under this new business were expected to be under the Bravia brand, so calling the company Bravia Inc. makes a whole lot of sense. In regards to the Bravia Inc. equity split, the company will be established as a consolidated subsidiary of TCL. Sony will be considered a nearly equal partner.
Bravia Inc. will succeed Sony’s home entertainment business
Bravia Inc. is expected to start operations in April of 2027, so it’ll be a while yet before products from this partnership are available to buy. That’s also assuming everything goes through regulatory approval. Sony says that Bravia Inc. will succeed its home entertainment business, and will include a wide range of products. The most obvious will be consumer TVs, but it will also include several B2B products. Such as B2B flat panel displays and B2B LED displays. It will also include projectors, and home audio equipment like home theater systems and audio components.
