Researchers and scientists began work on sodium-ion battery development as early as the late 1970s to the early 1980s, and continued to progress throughout the eighties. However, lithium-ion batteries were also in development around the same time; when breakthroughs in lithium-ion technology began to show more promise in the 1990s, most research on sodium-ion batteries was halted in favor of the more commercially-favorable product.
