Later this year, Qualcomm is expected to debut its next-gen flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. Now, thanks to fresh leaks from tipster Digital Chat Station, we have a better idea of what the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 will be bringing to the table.
Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 spec leaksÂ
According to the leaks, Digital Chat Station has revealed two versions of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. This comes in the form of the SM8975 and the SM8950. The former is expected to be the Pro variant, which we have heard about in previous leaks, while the latter is the base model.
In terms of CPU configuration, both versions appear to be the same, using a 2+3+3 setup. This will most likely be Qualcomm’s own custom Oryon cores as we saw in the company’s newer chipsets. However, the difference lies in their clockspeeds. Based on the latest rumors, the Pro version is said to feature performance cores that are clocked at 5.0GHz. But there is the potential of them hitting 5.5-6.0GHz.
That’s a massive jump compared to the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, whose performance cores hit speeds of 3.62GHz. Also, the leak seems to confirm that the Pro variant will use LPDDR6 RAM. Both chipsets are also expected to be built on TSMC’s 2nm process, which in itself should bring about better performance and efficiency.
Good news for gamers
Another area where both variants differ is the GPU. The Pro version is said to use the Adreno 850 GPU with 18MB of GMEM, while the base model will use the Adreno 845 with 12MB of GMEM.
For context, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 uses the Adreno 840. However, it also sports 18MB of GMEM. So, while the base Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 will feature a newer GPU, its GMEM is slower. Whether or not this is noticeable to gamers remains to be seen. Presumably Qualcomm is doing this to help make the gap between the base and Pro models even wider.
That being said, don’t expect to see too many phones with the Pro version. Last we heard, it was going to be more expensive than the base model, especially combined with the use of LPDDR6 RAM. This means that companies who want to use it will probably reserve it for their top-tier Ultra devices.
We don’t have an official launch date yet, but an earlier rumor suggested Qualcomm could announce its new chipsets in September, coinciding with Apple’s iPhone 18 launch event.
