Which is better? Slow or fast charging your phone? If you’re someone that’s worried about battery health, you might have heard how fast charging has the potential to degrade the battery health faster than normal. But are those myths, or are those facts? Thanks to a recent video by HTX Studio, we might finally have our answer.
Slow or fast charging?
In the HTX Studio video, they tested the effects of both slow and fast charging on six Apple iPhone 12 models. They also did a similar test with Android phones. They created a system which would drain the phones from 5% and charge them up to 100% over and over again. Three of the phones were set to fast charge, and three set to slow charge.
So, what’s the answer? Turns out, it was a little disappointing. Based on the results so far, there was minimum battery drain from fast charging. This means that the effects of fast charging aren’t as bad as many would believe. This means if you’re the type that hates waiting around for their phone to charge, then go ahead and fast charge it.
That being said, it should be noted that this test doesn’t account for day-to-day usage. This means that depending on how you use your phone, you might not necessarily get the same results. Someone who spends most of their surfing the web or sending text messages won’t see a huge impact, versus someone who plays a lot of games that generate a lot of heat.
Additional tests
In addition to testing slow and fast charging, the video also tested the idea of keeping phones charged between 30% and 80%. There’s this idea that keeping your phone from fully depleting and fully charging will extend its lifespan. The video sort of proves it, but once again, the differences aren’t huge enough.
The phones they tested that kept the charge between 30-80% did not drop in overall health compared to those that didn’t. But honestly, you’re essentially giving yourself 50% of battery for the entire day. If you can get by, then go ahead. If not, it might not be worth the hassle or mental anguish.
As HTX Studio says, you should just charge whenever or however you like. Plus, these days, replacing your phone’s battery isn’t that expensive anyway.
