Last year, when Apple first introduced Apple Intelligence, it promised major overhauls to how iOS would work. It would also have a supposed profound change on Siri, which until now has basically been the laughing stock of the digital assistant space. Unfortunately, the massive Siri overhaul we were promised wasn’t delivered, but that could change in 2026. Now, according to a recent report, Apple and Google could work together to give Siri AI search superpowers.
Apple and Google might team up for AI search
According to a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple plans to launch its own AI-powered search tool next year. We’ve already seen Apple’s AI efforts with Apple Intelligence, and honestly, it’s worrying. However, Apple fans can breathe a slight sigh of relief.
This is because, according to Gurman, Apple might have a bit of AI help from Google for its search tool. This new system, referred to internally as World Knowledge Answers, will be integrated into Siri. Apple has also discussed the possibility of integrating it into Safari. If that’s the case, it could potentially give Perplexity’s new Comet browser and OpenAI a run for their money.
The report claims the new AI-powered search feature will include an interface featuring text, photos, videos, local points of interest, and more. It will also share similar functionality when it comes to AI search with ChatGPT, or making use of Google’s AI Overviews. It can also summarize search results quickly and make it more accurate compared to what Siri can currently do.
As for Apple and Google’s partnership, Gurman’s sources say both companies have reached a formal agreement. Apple will evaluate and test a Google-developed AI model. However, whether Apple will adopt it remains to be seen.
A long-standing partnership
Assuming this report is accurate, it only serves to highlight the long-standing partnership both companies have with each other. While both are rivals in the mobile space, there are certainly things either company does better than the other. For Google, it’s dominance in search is unparalleled. Apple, on the other hand, has a massive iPhone user base.
This is why Google pays Apple billions a year to remain the default search on Safari. That being said, we have to wonder how this new AI search partnership will work. Recently, a judge ruled against Google’s exclusive deals. We’re not sure if this partnership would run afoul of that ruling, but we’ll have to let the lawyers figure that out.
