At the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, Subaru has revealed its vision of the future – and it isn’t a full-electric one. Under the theme “Driving the Subaru Difference,” the brand unveiled two STI concepts: the battery-powered Performance-E STI and the combustion-powered Performance-B STI. Yes, high-octane is still the name of Subaru’s game. And while both point toward Subaru’s next chapter, the latter stands out for looking unusually complete.
In the metal, the Performance-B STI Concept feels less like a theoretical showpiece and more like something the brand could easily greenlight. Compact, muscular, and unmistakably Subaru, it sits low and wide, with crisp bodywork and rally-bred aggression. Between its flared arches, hood scoop, and gigantic gloss-black rear wing, the car looks ready for production. It’s the kind of concept that doesn’t need to shout to make its point – it simply looks like it belongs on the road.

The Turbo Boxer Madness
Subaru says the Performance-B STI embodies its “Performance Scene,” combining power, control, and usability. Beneath the sharp exterior lies a turbocharged horizontally opposed engine mated to the brand’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive – the same formula that built Subaru’s reputation. No specs were shared, but the setup speaks to continuity rather than nostalgia.
The design is assertive without being outlandish. A bold front bumper, black mesh grille, and angular LED headlights set the tone, while the side skirts and wheel arches emphasize width and stance. The rear diffuser and dual exhaust outlets add a motorsport edge. It’s easy to immediately draw comparison to the Toyota GR Corolla and Honda Civic Type R, and rightly so – the Subaru feels like a credible rival waiting with massive wings.
Even without interior details, the car gives off the impression of being functional and focused. The Performance-B isn’t flashy; it’s simply perfect for what it intends to do – channeling the spirit of the WRX STI through a cleaner, more mature lens.

The Electric Counterpart
Sharing the stage was the Performance-E STI Concept, Subaru’s take on a future electric performance car. The design is sleeker, lower, and more sculpted, emphasizing aerodynamics and efficiency. Subaru describes it as a study that blends enjoyment with peace of mind, pointing to how it envisions its EV lineup evolving.
While the Performance-E represents what’s ahead, the Performance-B STI serves as a reminder that Subaru’s identity still has mechanical depth. Together, they show a brand looking forward – but not forgetting the value of a good engine note.
