For years, Samsung has designed its “Fold” devices with a very specific vision. The company thinks of them as tall, narrow phones that unfold into a mini tablet. While this design makes the device easy to grip, some users have found the outer screen a bit too cramped for comfortable typing. However, new findings suggest that the company is about to offer a much-needed alternative. Recent rumors mention an alleged wide-screen Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, and now concrete evidence in the form of system animations has emerged in leaked One UI 9 builds.
Goodbye narrow screens: The Galaxy Z Fold is finally getting wider
The first real clues about this new hardware didn’t come from a flashy press release. Instead, Android Authority found them in the code of the company’s own software. Early builds of Samsung’s One UI 9 contain official system animations that showcase a brand-new wide Galaxy Z Fold form factor. Labeled under the codename “H8” (linked to model number SM-F971U), these animations reveal a foldable device that is significantly wider than any previous Galaxy Z Fold.
The short clips show the device opening and closing in both light and dark modes. It’s noteworthy that the animations don’t reveal every detail. There are still pending aspects such as the camera housing or specific materials. However, they give us a very clear idea of the phone’s footprint. It seems Samsung is moving toward a shape that feels more like a traditional smartphone when closed, rather than a slender remote control.
Breaking the aspect ratio mold
When we look closer at these leaked schematics, the proportions are quite surprising. Early estimates suggest the outer display might sport a 16:10 aspect ratio. To put that into perspective, that is even wider than the original Google Pixel Fold, which was previously the gold standard for “passport-style” foldables.
This shift could solve one of the biggest complaints about the current Fold lineup. A wider inner screen would provide a much better experience for watching movies or multitasking without those awkward black bars. It also appears Samsung might be responding to rumors of a future folding iPhone.
The fact that these animations are already baked into One UI 9 suggests that a launch is closer than we think. Industry watchers expect this “Wide” variant to debut alongside the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8 this summer.
This leaves us with plenty of questions: Will this wider version carry a “Pro” or “Ultra” price tag? How will Samsung balance two different Fold models in the same lineup? We will have to wait to get the answers we want.
