Certain Samsung refrigerators ship with a cover display, offering a sense of premiumness to your smart home. This addition, while entertaining, is also convenient for changing modes over Wi-Fi and other features. As you’d expect, these don’t come cheap. You’ll have to shell out top dollar to get one for yourself. This will be the last place you’d expect to see ads, but it appears Samsung thinks differently, as it will allegedly start serving ads on the cover display of these refrigerators.
Samsung is reportedly serving ads on the cover display of refrigerators
While we’re used to seeing ads on smartphones, this is new. A Reddit user has posted an image showing that their Samsung refrigerator has received a software update. The alleged changelog image notes that you’ll see advertisements on the cover screens for Weather, Color, and Daily Board themes. Samsung claims this change is “to enhance” their service and offer additional content to users.
On the positive side, Samsung clarifies that Cover Screen for the Art and Gallery themes will not show ads. This means you can avoid ads by sticking with these two themes, at least for now.

It’s unclear which models are currently getting the ads
It’s unclear which refrigerators will be getting the new update, as there is a wide range of models with a cover display. Neither Samsung nor the Reddit user explicitly mentioned these details. Samsung views the attempt to sell ads as a feature that benefits users, but ultimately, they’re an annoyance. Additionally, there’s an obvious presumption that users’ personal data is collected to serve ads.
If Samsung wanted to serve ads, it should have informed people while they were purchasing the refrigerator that they would eventually see ads. This would have helped them to make an informed decision. But that is not the case here. Would you buy a premium refrigerator that serves ads?
