Over the years, we’ve seen phone makers attempt different ways to help users navigate their devices’ UI. There was the physical home button, which later evolved to on-screen buttons, and these days, swiping and using gestures is the norm. Samsung typically uses the three-button navigation by default, but in One UI 8.5, the company could move to gestures.
Samsung to use gesture navigation by default
SammyGuru reports that in One UI 8.5, Samsung could be making gesture navigation the default. Like we said, Samsung typically gives users the option to use gestures or the three-button navigation style. However, the company usually defaults to three buttons. But now, the report suggests that Samsung could change that.
This was spotted during the setup process, where it seems that Samsung chooses swipe gestures as the default. Do note that users still have the option to go back to the three-button navigation system.
However, as SammyGuru points out, this change could help Samsung align with Google’s vision for Android. Android 16 places an emphasis on gestures and more full-screen experiences. So, Samsung making gestures the new default could bring it in line with the latest Android update.
Applies to future devices
So, when will Samsung implement this change? If you already own a Samsung phone, chances are this isn’t applicable to you. However, if you buy a new Samsung phone after the release of One UI 8.5, and assuming your device is eligible for the update, there’s a good chance this change could affect you.
It will also presumably apply to future handsets. We’re talking about the Samsung Galaxy S26 series, which will most likely come with One UI 8.5 preinstalled. The Galaxy S26 series is slated for the early part of 2026. This is before the release of Android 17, so coming with One UI 8.5 makes sense.
But what do you think? Are you still sticking with the three-button navigation system, or have you switched to using gestures.
