Apple is far behind in the foldable market, even when Samsung, Huawei, and others are racing ahead. Lately, we’ve been hearing that the Cupertino giant might finally introduce this large form factor phone in 2026. Reports claim that Apple was testing realistic prototypes of the device in the summer, and iOS 27 could focus on features catering to the new device. It appears there’s some progress in this matter. The latest remarks from Samsung Display president hint that the iPhone Fold’s display could be moving along with production.
iPhone Fold display production may kick off soon
Samsung Display president Lee Cheong reportedly told journalists in Seoul that it is accelerating its preparation for mass production of OLED displays designed for foldable smartphones. This apparently will be for a “North American client.” While he hasn’t explicitly said the name of the company, it may very well be Apple.
Samsung is Apple’s main partner for iPhone panels, even for its advanced models. It’s only natural to expect the South Korean giant to supply the display for the upcoming iPhone Fold.
The foldable iPhone may debut alongside the iPhone 18
Lee said that the 8.6th generation organic light-emitting diode (OLED) production line currently in preparation will start operations by the end of the second quarter or third quarter next year. The top executive notes that, “We are also moving forward with preparations for mass production of OLED for foldable phones to be supplied to a North American client.”
These comments almost confirm the rumors that Apple’s first foldable iPhone is indeed gearing up to debut next year. The iPhone Fold may debut alongside the iPhone 18 lineup. The phone may feature an inward-folding crease-free display and a new A-series chipset. It could get a Touch ID, a second-gen C2 modem, and an in-cell touch display. It may ditch the physical SIM card slot altogether.
