Counterpoint has released its latest report regarding the state of the foldable smartphone market in Q2 2025. As per the report, Samsung is no longer the world’s number two foldable smartphone brand. Huawei continued to retain its number one position in the foldable market in the second quarter of this year, while Motorola was the runner-up.
The foldable smartphone market rose 45 percent YoY in Q2 2025
As per the report, Huawei captured a total of 45 percent of the global smartphone market in terms of shipments in Q2 2025. In comparison, the company claimed a total of 33 percent in the same period last year.
Talking about Samsung, the South Korean tech giant’s market share dropped from 21 percent to 9 percent year-on-year. Motorola, on the other hand, nearly doubled its market share to 28 percent from 14 percent, and took the second spot in Counterpoint’s latest report. The report categorizes the other OEMs as “other,” which accounts for 18 percent of the total market.
The global foldable smartphone shipments rose to 45 percent YoY in Q2 2025. China’s phone market accounted for most of that, with Huawei selling the Mate X6 like hot cakes there. Motorola helped increase the US foldable market with the success of the Razr series of devices. While Huawei capitalized on the ultra-premium segment, Motorola captured the entry-level foldable market.

There’s a hope for Samsung in Q3 2025
It’s worth pointing out that Counterpoint’s latest report doesn’t count the shipments of Samsung’s latest Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 series of devices. These phones have sold very well around the launch time and continue to do so. So it won’t be surprising if we see Samsung overshadowing Motorola to take the 2nd spot in the report for Q3 2025.
Notably, recent reports indicate that Samsung is now planning to manufacture 260,000 units of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 in September. These numbers are much higher than the company’s original plan of making 200,000 units.
In any event, if all goes well, Samsung will give a stiff competition to Huawei for the number one position in the global foldable smartphone market in the third quarter of 2025.
