Samsung is no stranger to headsets. The company dipped its toes in the VR market with its Gear VR headset but eventually called it quits. Now, the company is looking to return with the Samsung XR headset, also known as Project Moohan. However, this time round, Samsung is taking a more conservative approach and expects only to ship 100,000 units of its Android XR headset.
Samsung might only ship 100,000 units of Android XR
According to a report from the Korean publication The Elec, Samsung is playing it safe with the shipment of its upcoming Project Moohan headset. The report claims that Samsung plans to ship around 100,000 units of the Android XR wearable “this year.” However, as 9to5Google notes, it is unclear what “this year” means.
Does it mean that Samsung only plans to ship 100,000 units before the end of 2025, or are we talking about the financial year of 2025? Either way, it is still a pretty conservative figure. This is because when we’re talking about VR/XR devices, headsets like the Meta Quest 3 were estimated to have sold 1 million units by 2024.
So, Samsung only plans to sell 100,000 units, which is a mere fraction of that. However, to be fair, the Samsung XR headset is a different beast compared to the Meta Quest 3. The device collaborates with Samsung and Google and will run Google’s Android XR platform. It is possible that Samsung is learning from Apple’s mistakes.
When the Apple Vision Pro launched, Apple had enough components to make around 600,000 units of the headset. However, when it went on sale, Apple reportedly only sold around 200,000 units.
The future of wearables
We can’t say we blame Samsung for playing it safe. The company didn’t exactly experience runaway success with its Gear VR headset, so it is understandable that they don’t want to be burned a second time.
However, there’s no denying that we’re seeing a rise in interest in headsets. Headsets have come a long way since the days of Google Glass and Google Cardboard. Devices like the Vision Pro, putting aside its price and lack of an ecosystem, feel downright magical in terms of its functionality.
Maybe the Samsung XR headset will do better than the company expects. That would be a best-case scenario. Either way, we’ll have to wait until September 29th to find out when the headset is rumored to launch.
