It is no secret that Samsung is working on a tri-fold smartphone. However, there is the question of when it will launch. The good news is that for those with deep enough pockets, you will be able to get your hands on the phone this year. During its Q2 2025 earnings, Samsung confirmed its plans to launch its tri-fold phone by the end of 2025.
Samsung confirms tri-fold launch for 2025
According to Samsung itself, the company will launch its tri-fold smartphone and its XR headset in the second half of 2025. The company had previously confirmed the launch. So, this announcement isn’t news per se, but more like a commitment to the company’s ambitions.
It is still unclear what kind of hardware the phone could be packing. However, last we heard, the handset could be powered by the same chipset as its Galaxy S25 series. We’re also hearing rumors of the use of a combination of both aluminum and titanium. It is also rumored to come with 16GB of RAM, but unfortunately, the battery is where the phone could fall short.
The leaks are suggesting the use of a “regular” battery. This is compared to other phones like the OPPO Find N5, which uses a silicon-carbon battery. We also heard that it could charge at a measly 25W. This is kind of disappointing for a phone that’s rumored to cost an eye-watering $3,000.
However, we imagine that those who buy the phone are more interested in the display than the rest of the specs. Of course, the specs do matter. But those who want a tri-fold phone might want it more for the larger foldable display, either for productivity or media consumption.
What the competition is up to
Samsung isn’t the first company to launch a tri-fold smartphone. Huawei beat them to the punch with the Mate XT back in 2024. Based on our hands-on review, it was a stunning device that was surprisingly thin and packed an impressive set of cameras. Huawei is expected to follow up with its second-gen Mate XT as soon as next month.
This means that if Samsung thought it would only have to compete with a 2024 phone, it is dead wrong.
