AI is going to be the industry buzzword for the foreseeable future. We’re seeing a lot of it being used in a variety of products today, from hardware to software. So, it doesn’t come as a surprise that Samsung wants to double down on its efforts. Speaking to reporters, Roh Tae-moon, the Acting DX Division Head of Samsung Electronics, wants AI in 90% of its products by 2030.
Samsung wants AI in 90% of products by 2030
Roh was quoted as saying, “We will utilize AI (artificial intelligence) in 90% of all business areas by 2030. We will transform Samsung Electronics into a company that utilizes AI the best and grows through AI. We will secure competitiveness through AI and make it a growth engine.”
In addition to the company’s lofty goal of 90% AI in Samsung products by 2030, Roh also revealed the company’s ambitions to equip over 400 million Galaxy devices with AI by this year. “We opened the era of AI phones with the Galaxy S24 last year and applied AI to 200 million Galaxy devices. We will further expand AI applications this year. Major functions in TVs and home appliances will also evolve through AI. We are also focusing on robots utilizing physical AI as a future growth engine.”
So far, we think Samsung is well on its way to meet its goals. Ever since Samsung launched Galaxy AI, the company has been steadily introducing it to new products and even older existing ones. However, whether or not it can be done in a meaningful way remains to be seen.
Is AI overhyped?
One of the problems with AI is that the term is being used too liberally. Many companies that introduce some kind of “smarts” with their product immediately slap the AI label on it. This kind of dilutes the term.
We’ve already seen how capable AI is when it comes to generating video and images from text prompts. We’ve also seen how AI can help people code apps from scratch, even with zero experience, or write books, or put together entire reports.
However, like we said, will Samsung be able to introduce meaningful and useful AI? Or will it just be another exercise in marketing, where any feature remotely smart gets the AI label?
