Van life has exploded in popularity and an increasing number of automakers are trying to appeal to this growing segment. Renault is among them and they’ll be using this weekend’s Van Life Expo to introduce the new Trafic Escapade.
Essentially a no-frills camper van, the model features swiveling second-row seats and a rear sofa-bed. They’re joined by a compact kitchen module, which resides in the cargo area.

The module is the star of the show as it features a gas cook top, a storage compartment, and a foldaway sink with a spray attachment. The latter is fed by a 1.3 gallon (5 liter) water tank. They’re joined by a folding table in the range-topping variant.
Renault was coy on specifics, but confirmed the Trafic Escapade will be offered in Evolution and Iconic trims. Both will apparently come equipped with a rearview camera, an assortment of driver assistance systems, and 17-inch alloy wheels.
Customers can also look forward to a wireless smartphone charger, an automatic climate control system, and an 8-inch Easy Link multimedia system.
Under the hood, there are two different engines. The entry-level variant has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder Blue dCi that produces 148 hp (110 kW / 150 PS) and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm) of torque. It can be connected to either a manual or nine-speed automatic transmission.
Van lifers can also get an upgraded 2.0-liter four-cylinder developing 168 hp (125 kW / 170 PS) and 280 lb-ft (380 Nm) of torque. However, they’ll have to settle for the nine-speed automatic.
The Trafic Escapade will arrive early next year and pricing will be announced closer to launch. That being said, the model appears to be positioned as an affordable getaway vehicle for weekend adventures.
