If you’re looking for honest reviews about a product, Reddit is actually one of the best places to look. While there are many video and written reviews online, sometimes those reviews are sponsored. This means that it might omit some of the negative aspects about a product. But Reddit? Completely unfiltered. This is why the company is embracing the use of AI as part of the Reddit 20th anniversary.
Reddit’s 20th anniversary and the AI push
A lot of online services like Google have embraced the use of AI. Google has tools like AI Overview which summarizes your search queries to give you answers on the spot, versus having to comb through multiple websites. To a certain extent, Reddit is embracing something similar for Reddit Answers as part of its 20th anniversary.
Reddit Answer is where users go on Reddit to find answers to their questions. However, instead of users sifting through multiple posts to find what they’re looking for, Reddit is turning to AI to provide users with their version of an AI overview. It will also point users to other Reddit threads or posts if they want additional detail or context.
At least with this method, Reddit isn’t necessarily “stealing” content from other publications. This is compared to other AI companies, many of whom have been accused of using articles and images without permission to train their AI models with. Speaking to The Verge, Reddit’s CTO Chris Slowe says, “If you just want the short summary, it’s there. If you want to delve deeper, it’s an easier way to get into it.”
Filtering out AI answers
In the past, Reddit users would contribute to posts using their own knowledge and experience. However, now thanks to AI tools like ChatGPT, everyone can become an “expert.” This has led to an issue where many answers and posts on Reddit have been called out as using AI or posted by bots.
This is an area Reddit is trying to tackle. The company is on the active lookout for comments that might have been generated by AI. This means that users can rest assured knowing that the content summarized by Reddit’s AI is based on actual human content, not a summary of another AI summary.
According to Slowe, “It’s one of the few places online where real people share real opinions. That authenticity is what gives Reddit its value. If we lose trust in that, we lose what makes Reddit…Reddit. Our focus is, and always will be, on keeping Reddit a trusted place for human conversation.”
