One of the most recognizable SUVs in recent history is the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. Like so many other off-roaders for sale today, the G-Class has roots as a military vehicle. First commissioned by the Shah of Iran, who was one of the largest shareholders of Mercedes-Benz at the time, this multipurpose vehicle ended up being sold to civilians for the 1979 model year before serving for the country’s military. As time went on and other off-road models gained popularity, Mercedes-Benz decided to ship its new 2002 model to the US, where we saw our first example of the brand’s luxurious weekend SUV.
