The world is ablaze with a variety of different issues at the moment, of varying levels of importance, and one of those is now reportedly RAM theft at Costco, brought on by the astronomical price increase of RAM kits across the industry globally.
It has reportedly gotten so bad that people would rather steal the RAM from a display PC inside a Costco and attempt to make their escape than pay for it. Since the tail end of last year, prices have steadily been increasing on most major consumer electronic components that make up a gaming PC. This includes RAM and essentially anything that uses RAM to make up a different piece of hardware. Such as GPUs. SSDs have seen a meteoric rise in cost as well. In other words, it’s not great out there for anyone looking to buy these components. For some, it seems the answer is just to steal it.
Sky-high RAM prices have led to Costco removing RAM from gaming PCs on display to stop theft
It’s not clear if Costco has decided to do this as a company-wide move across the board, but in one location, Costco has taken these steps as a preventative measure. A post on Reddit from user u/accent2012 shared a photo of the PC section at their local Costco, noting that the RAM had been removed. Another user in the comments says they spoke to the employee who handles the PC section at their local store and that they had done the same thing. Costco has also reportedly done this with GPUs to prevent the same types of situations from happening.
Some incidents have reportedly been caught on camera, so it’s likely that some of the thieves may face the consequences. That being said, the fact that people are going to these lengths to avoid paying for RAM because the prices have gotten so high is a good sign of how bad things are. Removing RAM from a display PC isn’t exactly a blink of an eye kind of thing. You have to open the PC case first, then remove the RAM safely enough that it doesn’t get damaged. Not to mention dealing with any potential interference from other components on the inside.
