Quick Share has long been the most convenient file-sharing tool on Android devices. The tool lets users quickly send photos, videos, and documents between nearby smartphones without cables or third-party apps. Now, in a new update, Google has quietly removed the Everyone Option from the Quick Share. The change brings the Android sharing system closer to Apple’s AirDrop approach.
The Everyone Option has been removed from the latest Quick Share update on Android
Until now, Quick Share had four different receiving modes or settings. Users could limit transfers to their own devices signed in to the same account, allow only synced contacts, enable the Everyone Option for anyone nearby, or temporarily activate everyone mode for 10 minutes. The Everyone Option, especially the one where it remains active unless turned off manually, can be quite risky. Anyone within range could attempt to send files, increasing exposure to unwanted or malicious content.
While the file cannot be sent without users’ approval, critics have always warned that social engineering tactics can trick people into accepting suspicious files. To address this security risk, the latest Quick Share update for Android devices has quietly removed the always-on Everyone Option. The updated file sharing system now mirrors Apple’s AirDrop structure more closely. For reference, AirDrop always had a limited-time visibility option instead of permanent open access, which can be a security nightmare. The new change not only improves the usability of the Android file sharing system, but also improves its security.
New update adds several performance enhancements
Apart from the security change, the latest update improves performance and compatibility across several devices. On the newer Pixel models, file transfers are faster and more stable. Google is also working to improve cross-platform compatibility, allowing smoother sharing between Android phones and other ecosystems. The tech giant had recently announced that they’re working to roll out native AirDrop file transfer support via Quick Share on more Android phones.
