We’ve all been there: you plug in your phone for a quick top-up, and within minutes, it’s uncomfortably warm. While charging speeds have soared over the last few years, the side effect has always been hot. Now, Qualcomm is taking a new approach with its latest technology, and it’s less about breaking speed records and more about keeping things cool. Meet Quick Charge 5 Plus, Qualcomm’s latest charging solution that promises to be as fast as it is cool.
After five years, Qualcomm has announced Quick Charge 5 Plus, the next evolution of its fast-charging standard. Its predecessor, Quick Charge 5, focused on raw speed, promising to charge a device to 50% in just five minutes. However, the new “Plus” version shifts the conversation to efficiency and performance. Qualcomm says the goal isn’t to be faster but to deliver a smoother, cooler, and more consistent charging experience.
Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 5 Plus fixes the heat problem of fast charging
The secret to Quick Charge 5 Plus lies in a smart change to its power delivery. Many high-wattage charging systems achieve their speeds by cranking up the voltage, which is a key contributor to heat. Qualcomm’s new solution takes a different path, using lower voltage at higher currents (up to 20V at 7A).
This is a big deal for two reasons. First, it directly tackles the heat issue. A cooler phone can maintain its peak charging speed for longer, avoiding the “throttling” that often occurs when a device gets too hot. Second, minimizing heat is crucial for battery longevity. Over time, excessive heat can degrade your battery, reducing its overall health and lifespan. Quick Charge 5 Plus aims to protect your phone’s battery while still giving you a quick charge.
Playing well with others
Another standout feature of the new standard is its widespread compatibility. Quick Charge 5 Plus is backward compatible with all previous Quick Charge versions, going all the way back to the 2.0 standard.
But the real benefit for users is its support for other major charging technologies. The list includes USB Power Delivery (PD) and PPS. This means a Quick Charge 5 Plus-certified accessory can intelligently power a wide range of devices, from Android phones and tablets to iPhones and even some laptops, regardless of their internal hardware.
Qualcomm is positioning this as a universal solution that makes fast charging more practical for everyday use. We can expect to see the first devices with Quick Charge 5 Plus support announced at the Snapdragon Summit later this month. Meanwhile, the first Quick Charge 5 Plus-compatible accessories will hit the market before the end of the year.
