Qualcomm recently introduced not one, but two new flagship chipsets. The ultra-powerful Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is the outright leader. However, the company also confirmed key details for its high-performance sibling: the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. This second chip appears designed to give phone makers more options, delivering premium performance at a potentially more manageable price point. OnePlus confirmed that it will be the first company to use this chip.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 5: key spec details
The 8 Gen 5 is a serious piece of hardware. Like the Elite version, Qualcomm builds the chip on a cutting-edge 3nm process, utilizing TSMC’s world-class manufacturing technology. At its heart, the chip leverages Qualcomm’s custom Oryon CPU cores. The setup features a single, high-speed Prime core clocked at an impressive 3.8GHz. The other seven high-performance cores run at up to 3.32GHz (reported by Android Authority). That’s right, you won’t find any “energy saving” cores in this model, following the philosophy of its more expensive sibling. However, the core setup (1 + 7) of the chip is different from the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5’s (8 + 2).
This architectural choice is important because it allows the 8 Gen 5 to deliver significant, blazing speed without the highest possible power draw or thermal demands. It makes it a flexible engine for a wider range of high-end devices.
There are still details to be known
Beyond the raw CPU power, the chip includes several other components vital for modern mobile devices. Qualcomm highlighted a “next-gen” Adreno GPU for graphics, a “powerful” dedicated NPU (Neural Processing Unit), and a “superior AI-ISP powered camera.” While the details remain vague for now, these descriptors signal a heavy focus on artificial intelligence capabilities. There seems to be a focus on tasks like on-device language models and advanced photo processing. These are key areas where users experience daily performance improvements.
Overall, early benchmarks of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 suggest it offers very high-level performance. We’re talking results comparable to those of the original Snapdragon 8 Elite. The inclusion of the custom Oryon cores is a real success on Qualcomm’s part. Will we get an even more affordable Snapdragon 8s Gen 5 in the future? Only time will tell.
