Samsung is apparently on a memory sample shipping spree because it has now reportedly sent out samples of its LPDDR6X memory to companies such as Qualcomm. This follows reports of Samsung having sent out samples of its HBM4 memory to NVIDIA a little earlier this year, leading to the company’s nearly ready mass production process.
Samsung seems eager to prepare the commercial market for the LPDDR6 memory standard. To do that, however, it needs companies to work with early samples and test them out. That appears to be exactly what’s happening. Korean news outlet The Bell has stated that Samsung has shipped out samples to Qualcomm. All in preparation for getting these chips in the hands of manufacturing partners. These samples represent the next generation of low-power memory chips. Low-power is great for battery life. However, these chips will be new, and the rising cost of memory chips likely isn’t going to be great for cost.
With LPDDR6X memory samples out the door, Samsung expects these to be ready for 2027
According to the report, Samsung is expecting these new memory chips to be ready for the commercial market in the second half of 2027. That’s a long way out from now. So, maybe Samsung will be able to escape charging higher prices for these chips. There is just as good a chance that commercialization timing won’t matter. Higher memory prices are expected to carry through 2027. If not the entire year, at least most of it.
So it’ll be interesting to see if this impacts the cost of these chips for manufacturers and whether or not the memory is used in a wide variety of products. With the timeframe of availability, you certainly won’t see this memory used in the Galaxy S26 family of devices, which, by the way, you can now reserve via Samsung’s Galaxy Reserve program if you like saving money.
