The PS5 is a hugely successful console for Sony and the PlayStation brand, and today proves that point once again, as console sales numbers have crossed a milestone for Sony with over 80 million units shipped to customers around the globe. While Sony has had a few quarters that didn’t meet its expectations early in the console’s lifecycle, the company has been steadily selling more and more units since then.
According to Sony’s earnings report from the first quarter of this fiscal year, which ended on June 30, the company shipped 2.5 million PS5 units. At the same time last year, it shipped 2.4 million units. That makes this year’s numbers a small increase, but an increase nonetheless. This is also a fair amount of time after Sony increased the prices of the PS5 lineup in several regions.
PS5 console sales numbers were accompanied by strong software sales
While console sales numbers for the PS5 saw an increase this first quarter, software sales were strong as well. In 2024, Sony’s software sales for the PS5 in the first quarter were 53.6 million units. Sony blew by that number this year with a total of 65.9 million units in the first quarter, marking a 23% increase over the previous year. It’s also worth noting that these are sales numbers for full game software, and not including expansions or microtransactions.
As part of the software sales, Sony says that first-party game titles also saw an increase, moving up from 6 million units in 2024 to 6.9 million units this year. Sony also saw an increase in the monthly active users on PlayStation Network. The total number for this quarter was 123 million users, which is a pretty big uptick from the first quarter in 2024 at 116 million.
Overall, PlayStation and gaming in general remain some of Sony’s more profitable segments. The PS5 isn’t as successful as the PS4 yet, but it’s closing the gap. The PS4 was also released in 2013, meaning it was out for about seven years before the PS5 was released. Going off that timeframe, the PS5 still has about two more years to catch up. Hopefully, Sony will see this same kind of success with its rumored upcoming handheld.
