The problem with a lot of phones these days is its repairability. Companies obviously prefer if you buy new phones rather than repair new ones, and some have gone out of their way to make removing components easier. So, the question is, is the new Google Pixel 10 an easy repair? Thanks to a teardown by the folks at iFixit, it seems that the Pixel 10 has a new internal design that could make things easier.
Pixel 10 teardown
One of the changes Google made in the Pixel 10’s internal design is with a new battery removal mechanism. Previously, Google used a slide saw-style pull tab mechanism. This require users to slice through the adhesive underneath. This made removing the battery a bit tricky and difficult.
However, this new pull tab mechanism seems to make things easier. It doesn’t come off quite as easily or seamlessly, but with a few wiggles and tugs, the battery came free. Compare this with the previous method, we think this will be a lot easier for most users. Also, Google has made it so that if you want to replace only the battery, you will not have to remove the screen.
This cuts down on extra steps and reduces the chances that more components might get damaged during the Pixel 10 teardown.
Overall is it an easy fix?
That being said, do these changes make the Pixel 10 repair easier? If you’re mostly thinking about replacing the battery, then yes. From what we can tell, it looks like it’ll be a considerably easier process. Plus, the fact that you don’t need to remove the display is an added bonus.
Also, Google has made it so that the backplate of the Pixel 10 can be removed without a heatgun. If you have the right tools, which iFixit is selling on its website, then it should be an easy process. iFixit also found that the Pixel 10 uses fewer screws compared to most flagship phones. Once again, this reduces the complexity a bit.
That being said, for now, iFixit is giving the Pixel 10 a 6 out of 10 (provisionally) in terms of repairability. In the meantime, if you want, Google has published the repair manual for the Pixel 10. You can take a look if you are planning on doing your own repairs in the future.
