Pebble is about to ship its new smartwatch lineup to the market. However, before that, the company is rolling out updates that hint at how serious it is about making a comeback. Founder Eric Migicovsky has revealed that the coming Pebble Time 2 will get enhanced screen scaling for older apps, and that the Pebble app store is finally making a comeback.
Pebble app store makes a comeback with new features
While confirming the comeback of the Pebble App Store, the founder adds that it will now be powered by Rebble with tons of new features and options that will help the user discover more content. This move signals a quiet rebuild before the next wave.
Eric further adds that because the Pebble Time 2 has a larger, high-resolution display than previous models, older watch faces and apps would appear boxed in with black borders. To address this particular concern, the team at Pebble has introduced a scaling option so these legacy apps can stretch and fill the entire screen. A lot of other developers are also updating their apps to support the new resolution.
Pebble app store will host about 2,000 apps and 10,000 watch faces
The revived Pebble app store will host nearly 2,000 apps and 10,000 watch faces (including the newer and legacy ones). It will also get a new section dubbed “Similar Apps/Recommendations.” Link previews are also supported, and they will enable users to share their favorite watch faces on social media.
This move also signals that Pebble is targeting more than a basic comeback. The scaling support ensures that existing apps won’t look broken at launch. This could very well help the brand to retain longtime users. The founder has also confirmed that a companion app for Android and iOS is in the works. However, it is not fully baked yet. Those willing to try out the early version should be prepared to face some rough edges.
