If your AI needs aren’t that heavy, you can mostly get by with the free version of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. However, there are perks to the paid version. This includes higher usage limits, faster responses, priority access, and more. Another perk, one that some of you might overlook, are projects. Well, the good news is that OpenAI has announced that free ChatGPT users can now access Projects as well.
Projects come to free ChatGPT
According to OpenAI’s announcement, the main takeaway here is that free users of ChatGPT can now access the Projects feature. In case you’re unfamiliar with Projects, it’s basically a way of sorting your chats with the AI model.
Over time, you might accumulate a lot of chats with ChatGPT. This can be messy, especially if you need to go back and look through past conversations. Projects allow you to sort your conversations based on your needs. For example, you can have a project specifically for coding, one for writing, one for generating images, and more.
Also, projects have the added benefit of containing custom instructions and file uploads. You can customize each project with its own set of instructions, so you can have one that takes on the persona for an artist, one that is an expert in Excel, and so on. Then, you can upload files that it can use for references.
There are a lot of advantages to sorting and organizing your AI chats with projects, so it’s good to see that it is no longer locked behind a subscription.
Other changes
In addition to bringing Projects to free users, OpenAI has also announced additional changes. This includes support for larger file uploads per project. Free users get to upload up to five files, 25 for Plus users, and 40 for Pro/Business/Enterprise users. There is also the option to select colors and icons for deeper customization, and Project-only memory controls. This will allow for more tailored context between projects, instead of a shared memory.
That being said, many in the comments are still calling out OpenAI for its new GPT-5 model. GPT-5, according to OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman, is supposed to be the best model the company has to offer. However, many disagree. There are multiple posts on X and Reddit where users are lamenting at how bad it is compared to previous models.
