Until recently, OpenAI reflected the gap between a casual AI user and a professional developer through pricing. More specifically, there was a staggering jump on plans from $20 to $200 per month. This clearly leaves an unexplored “middle ground” that could attract many users. With that in mind, OpenAI has officially launched a new $100 per month ChatGPT Pro subscription. This tier is specifically designed for those who find the standard Plus plan too restrictive but cannot justify the cost of the high-end Pro version.
OpenAI’s new $100 ChatGPT Pro plan targets developers
The main driver behind this new tier is Codex, OpenAI’s specialized tool for coding. The new $100 plan offers five times more usage of Codex than the $20 Plus subscription. For a limited time—until May 31—OpenAI is even doubling that capacity. That is, the firm is giving early adopters ten times the standard limit to handle high-intensity coding sessions without hitting a wall.
Of course, the $200 Pro version still exists and offers even higher limits (roughly 20 times more than Plus). However, both Pro tiers provide access to the same advanced models and core features. The difference lies purely in how much work you can get done before the system asks you to take a break.
Response to Claude’s tough competition
This launch isn’t happening in a vacuum. OpenAI is directly challenging Anthropic, whose $100 “Max” tier for Claude has become a favorite among developers. The new price point is a clear play to win back power users who may have migrated to Claude for its coding capabilities.
An OpenAI spokesperson highlighted that more than 3 million people are now using Codex weekly. This number has grown fivefold in just three months. To maintain the momentum, the company is positioning the $100 tier as the most “practical coding capacity for the money” in the current market.
OpenAI pricing tiers in 2026
With this addition, the ChatGPT lineup is becoming increasingly diverse. OpenAI pricing tiers for 2026 now include a free one (with ads), an $8 “Go” plan, the $20 Plus plan, and two versions of Pro at $100 and $200.
For the average person using AI to draft emails or summarize articles, the $20 Plus plan remains the best value. However, for professionals building complex software or managing parallel projects, this new middle ground offers a much-needed upgrade path that doesn’t break the bank.
