Last year, OpenAI announced plans to loosen content rules, potentially allowing AI-generated “erotica.” The company also hinted that OpenAI adult mode could launch in Q1 2026, but it appears to have hit a delay. This is actually the second time the feature has been delayed. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman previously planned to release it in December 2025.
OpenAI adult mode has hit a delay
In a statement made to Sources’ Alex Heath, OpenAI has confirmed that its adult mode feature will hit a slight delay. An OpenAI spokesperson told the publication, “We’re pushing out the launch of adult mode so we can focus on work that is a higher priority for more users right now.”
But why the delay? Is it that hard to create an adult mode for ChatGPT? According to the spokesperson, the company has been prioritizing other features. This includes “gains in intelligence, personality improvements, personalization, and making the experience more proactive.”
Now, we are still technically in Q1. OpenAI has until the end of March before it is officially considered a delay, so there’s still a bit of time. However, we wouldn’t hold our breaths. The company has not provided us with a new timeline, so we’ll just have to wait and see. In the meantime, we have to wonder if this is really such a good idea.
Is an “adult mode” ChatGPT a good idea?
AI is a very useful and efficient tool if you need to do research and ask in-depth questions. You can save yourself hours, if not days or weeks, looking up and understanding complex topics. But it’s hardly the perfect solution.
For starters, AI has been known to hallucinate. This is where AI spits out wrong answers, sometimes completely made up. Also, how knowledgeable it is also depends on the cutoff date for its training. If the training data ended in 2024, it won’t know about things that happened in 2025 or 2026, which can sometimes lead to wrong answers.
Also, let’s not forget the danger of AI, where people have gotten hurt or killed themselves because of it. If a non-adult mode AI model can do that, we’d hate to think of the potential damage an “adult mode” version could wreak.
