OnePlus India CEO Robin Liu has left the company. This comes just a couple of months after he reassured everyone that OnePlus was not shutting down, following our report that the company was phasing out operations in many markets. He called it “misinformation,” and now he has quit the company.
Liu’s departure was confirmed to Android Authority this morning, with the company releasing a statement:
We thank Robin for his contributions to OnePlus India. He moves on to pursue his personal passions, and we wish him the very best for his future endeavours.
OnePlus India operations continue with local strategy and business continuity ensured.
The Economic Times had reported that Liu was serving his notice period, which would end on March 31. Meaning that he quite very, very recently. Liu was reportedly moving back to China, while OnePlus was attempting to retain him.
This news comes hours after a leaker posted similar shutdown claims
Yesterday, X user Yogesh Brar had posted that OnePlus was winding down its operations in many markets. Citing that it was bad news for UK, US, and EU customers. Interestingly, not mentioning India. Brar later deleted that tweet, unfortunately.
Over the past few months, we’ve seen a lot of hints that OnePlus is making some big changes and is likely exiting a lot of markets over the next few months. Even though it’s hard not to read into Liu’s exit, it’s important to note that executives do leave companies quite often.
From what we were told by our sources back in January, OnePlus is planning to exit many of its key markets in the second half of the year. And things do seem to be lining up that way, at this point.
If OnePlus does leave the US, and North America as a whole, that’s going to be bad news for consumers. As Americans will be left with essentially the big three: Apple, Samsung, and Google. Motorola will likely swallow up a portion of OnePlus’ small market share. But Motorola isn’t really focusing on flagship phones here in the US, right now.
