The low-cost Samsung foldables, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Z Flip 7 SE, offer a range of AI features, courtesy of the One UI 8 software. Making things better, there’s also Google Gemini, which you can access even from the cover screen. This ability was believed to roll out to older Flip models like the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Flip 5. It turns out, it’s indeed possible with the One UI 8 update. However, it’s not straightforward, as there’s a process to enable Gemini access on the Galaxy Z Flip’s cover screen.
Here’s how to enable Google Gemini on your older Galaxy Z Flip’s cover screen
Samsung has started rolling out the big One UI 8 update to older flip foldables. This allows using Gemini on the cover screen, but the process of enabling it doesn’t seem easy. Long-pressing the power button doesn’t bring up the AI assistant. Instead, it asks you to “open phone to continue.” We can only hope Samsung makes summoning Gemini from the cover screen easier with future updates.
Android Authority reports that to use Gemini, including Gemini Live, on the device’s cover screen requires the “Hey Google” command or adding the app to the launcher widget available in Good Lock.
The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is receiving the One UI 8 update
Most of the things you’d expect from Gemini are possible even from the cover display. Gemini Live works, including camera feed sharing, conversational abilities, voice and text inputs for queries, and more. It’s reportedly missing screen sharing, which may not be a big deal considering the screen size. Either way, this makes using Gemini a bit easier and also convenient, albeit on a tiny screen.
The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is already receiving the One UI 8 update. We expect it to gradually roll out to more devices in other regions.
