Just a day ago, Apple introduced the AirPods Pro 3, offering a new generation of its high-end true wireless earbuds after three years. The new AirPods Pro 3 audio accessory comes with a handful of upgrades, featuring a new design and some features supported by Apple Intelligence. The Apple Intelligence-powered Live Translation feature is one of the biggest highlights of the AirPods Pro 3.
While demonstrating the Live Translation functionality during the iPhone 17 launch event, Apple didn’t mention anything about compatibility with older AirPods. However, the company’s press release for the AirPods Pro 3 did reveal that Live Translation is also available on older AirPods. However, there’s always a catch with older Apple devices offering features of the newer models.
Live Translation is coming to the AirPods 4 with ANC and AirPods Pro 2 models
In the press release for the AirPods Pro 3, Apple mentioned that the Live Translation feature will be available on the AirPods 4 with ANC and AirPods Pro 2 models later this year. Users will need their AirPods updated with the latest firmware to connect with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone running iOS 26 or later to use this functionality.
For those unaware, Apple Intelligence is available only on iPhone 15 Pro or later models running iOS 26. The Cupertino tech giant will start rolling out the new iOS update to these devices on September 15. Then the users of the AirPods 4 with ANC and AirPods Pro 2 will also be able to use Live Translation on their accessories.
The feature is currently in beta and supports select languages
Apple’s Live Translation functionality is exactly what it sounds like. The company’s software can translate languages in real-time while wearing the earbuds. It allows for something resembling natural conversation when talking to a person who speaks a different language.
With this new tech, you can simply pop in your earbuds and receive a real-time translation of any language spoken to you. When you respond, the translated text will appear on your iPhone’s screen. The experience is even more seamless when you’re speaking with someone who also has a pair of AirPods Pro 3.
Currently, Live Translation is in beta and supports only select languages. At launch, the users will be able to use the feature in English, French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish. Later this year, the firm will add support for Italian, Japanese, Korean, and simplified Chinese languages.
