For years, Google has implemented Smart Reply in various products, like Gmail and Google Messages. It’s a pretty convenient feature, allowing users to fire off quick replies without having to type it in. These replies are perfectly useful for emails or messages where you don’t need to type out a comprehensive reply. Now, Google is making it even better and more useful for Google Messages, where there’s an option to tap to draft your Smart Reply.
Google Messages gets tap to draft Smart Reply
According to 9to5Google, they discovered a toggle that allows users to draft their Smart Reply in Google Messages. However, note that this is for beta version 20260303_00_RC00. If you’re not taking part in the beta, you’ll have to wait before it’s pushed to the public.Â
Basically, what happens is that in the Settings, there’s an option that lets you toggle on either Tap to Send or Tap to Draft. It’s pretty self-explanatory, but at the same time, it’s pretty useful. Sometimes you might accidentally tap on a Smart Reply and send it off. Sure, you can delete the message for everyone, but what if you didn’t realize?

With this new toggle, users have the option to tap to draft their replies. This means that when you tap on a Smart Reply message, instead of sending it straight away, it’s drafted. This gives users the option of checking to make sure this is what they want to send, editing it, or deleting it.
If you’ve accidentally fired off an unintentional message and felt the sting of embarrassment, this could be a feature for you.
What else you should know
That being said, it should be pointed out that tap to send is still the default option in Google Messages. This means that users will need to enable the tap-to-draft feature once it becomes available. Otherwise, you might continue accidentally sending Smart Reply messages simply by tapping on them.
Also, like we said, this feature was spotted in the latest Google Messages beta. We don’t have a timeline yet on when Google plans to roll it out to everyone, so we’ll have to wait and see. But in the meantime, it sounds like a genuinely useful update, and we can’t wait to check it out.
