Not just any smart home tech, though, but all of Google’s smart home products for the past 10 years. Yes, even your decade-old Nest Cam Indoor will be getting Google Gemini. This is a pretty big revelation. Not to mention a big step forward for old devices that may have been getting long in the tooth and needed a little love and support.
Google says that this Gemini support will extend to every single home device from the past 10 years, and that means every single device. Your old Nest Hub from 2018? Yep, that’s included. It’s not completely clear yet what Gemini features will be available for some of the older devices. However, getting Gemini at all is still a big deal.
Google will open early access for Gemini on its older smart home devices this month
If you have one of the older devices and want to try out Gemini on it for yourself, you’ll be able to do so pretty soon. Google says that early access to the feature will begin this month. Exact dates aren’t confirmed, but it’s reported that the rollout will begin with cameras and doorbells.
It’ll move on to speakers and smart displays towards the middle or the end of the month. Unfortunately, that means Nest Hub owners will have to wait a little while longer before reaping the benefits of Gemini on their smart displays. But the wait should be worth it to breathe some new life into the tech.
In addition to announcing Gemini for its older smart home devices, Google also announced its new smart speaker that was initially rumored and teased earlier this year. It finally revealed its new Nest Cams as well. The cameras are launching this year, while the speaker won’t be available until 2026.
