A Nintendo Switch 2 price increase is something that the industry has speculated on since the RAM shortage, and while it might be inevitable, the cost to buy a Nintendo Switch 2 isn’t changing for the time being. Recent reports have suggested that the price of the console could go up. If that happens, however, it won’t be for a little while at least. It’s also worth noting that the Switch 2 is currently doing well in sales, so Nintendo doesn’t have a reason just yet to charge more money.
This is good news for consumers, as the price of the Switch 2 is already higher than the price of the Switch 1 during its first year of release. The question that people should be asking is how long can Nintendo hold out before it has to make the decision to charge consumers more for its newest hardware? There’s no clear answer to that right now, but there is some peace of mind knowing that, currently, Nintendo has no plans to make any changes in this regard. That doesn’t mean it won’t happen, of course. It simply means that a price change isn’t in the cards at this very moment.
Nintendo President says he doesn’t want to be overly influenced with regard to a Switch 2 price increase
Nintendo has gone on record stating that changing the price of the Switch 2 is a scenario that could happen. In past discussions, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa has stated that the price of the console could go up, but it would depend on market factors. Rising RAM costs are already rumored to be the reason for increased prices for other types of consumer electronics, such as GPUs, and likely smartphones, beginning this year.
That being said, Nintendo seems to be doing what it can to avoid doing the same as other companies unless absolutely necessary. Furukawa has recently stated that he “doesn’t want to be overly influenced by rising RAM costs” and that the situation has to be monitored closely. To some, this probably sounds like a price increase is coming at some point. That time is not now, however.
Furukawa doesn’t want to increase the price if the RAM shortage is a short-term thing. So, he and Nintendo are holding out for now. He also noted that if a price increase does happen, it would be “determined comprehensively, taking into account not only profitability but also the adoption of the platform, sales trends, and market conditions.” In other words, you won’t necessarily need to rush out and buy a Switch 2 right now if you want to avoid paying a higher price later.
