Dual-booting is not a new concept, where users can have two operating systems, like Windows and Linux, on their computers. This eliminates the need to own two separate devices. Imagine this becoming a possibility on your smartphone. Nex Computer is making it possible through a new smartphone, the NexPhone. It is capable of booting Android, Linux, and even Windows 11 OS.
NexPhone Can Multiboot Android, Linux, and Windows
The NexPhone seems to be a product of the company’s effort in getting more use out of smartphones. At the center of this is the custom NexOS operating system. Switching to Linux is very simple. Users need to just tap the dedicated Linux app to enter the Debian environment. The phone also gives you the option to boot into the ARM-based version of Windows 11. This is because Microsoft hasn’t made a mobile version of Windows 11. However, to use Windows 11, you need to restart the NexPhone.
The UI offers a custom tile-based UI with progressive web apps, something that feels nostalgic to Windows Phone users. Users can also install their favorite websites as web apps on the device’s Windows version. You can also connect the NexPhone to a monitor via USB-C to get a complete desktop experience, with a choice of Android Desktop Mode, Linux Debian, or Windows 11. You can also attach peripherals like a keyboard and mouse.

64MP camera, 5,000mAh battery, and 256GB storage
Beyond the OS, the NexPhone features a Qualcomm QCM6490, which is reportedly the Snapdragon 780G from 2021. This is apparently the same chip that powers the Fairphone 5. There are two main reasons for using this chip. First, it’s reportedly because Qualcomm offers support for this SoC until 2036. Second, probably because it’s the only chip that is compatible with all three operating systems.
Rest, you get 12GB of RAM and 256GB of native storage. You can further expand the storage via a microSD card. It sports a 6.58-inch LCD display with an FHD+ resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, and Corning Gorilla Glass 3. You get a modest 5,000mAh battery with 18W fast charging support and wireless charging. In the Android environment, it runs on Android 16 OS.
For photography, the NexPhone features a 64MP IMX787 main sensor and a 13MP ultrawide sensor. There’s a 10MP selfie camera. NexPhone also offers an IP69 rating for water and dust resistance and MIL-STD-810H certification for durability.
Price, availability
The NexPhone will cost you $549. You can reserve a unit by depositing $199. If you decide against buying the phone, that deposit is fully refundable. The shipments will begin in Q3 2026.
