Plex has announced that its platform suffered another data breach and has advised its users to reset their passwords immediately. In a post on Plex forums, the platform has revealed that it recently experienced a security incident, which may potentially involve a user’s account information.
Attackers have stolen critical user information
According to the streaming platform, an unauthorized third party accessed a “limited subset” of consumer data from one of its databases. The latest Plex data breach affected secured stored information, including user emails, usernames, securely scrambled passwords, and authentication data.
The platform announced that hackers stole encrypted passwords, rendering them unreadable to humans. However, it remains unclear whether threat actors can decrypt these passwords or use them to access consumer accounts.
Notably, Plex suffered a similar incident in 2022, when hackers stole email addresses, usernames, and encrypted passwords. At that time, the platform detected suspicious activity in its databases. The investigation revealed that a third party had gained unauthorized access.
Plex is requesting users to reset their passwords
While Plex is investigating the data breach, it has requested users to change their passwords. To change your password, visit https://plex.tv/reset. The firm has also asked users to sign out of any connected devices.
After resetting the password, you’ll find a check box that’ll allow you to do so. If you are using a single sign-on (SSO) provider like Google or Apple, visit https://plex.tv/security and hit the button that reads “Sign out of all devices.”
Furthermore, Plex has advised users to enable two-factor authentication to enhance the security of their accounts. The firm has apologized for the latest data breach and mentioned that it’s going to strengthen its security systems to prevent similar attacks in the future.
