Boston-based athletic shoe manufacturer New Balance has opened a $65-million expansion of its Skowhegan, ME manufacturing facility. The company has added a 120,000-square-foot, single-story expansion to the existing five-story factory building that was purchased by the company in 1981. The expansion brings together Skowhegan-based workers and those from a facility in nearby Norridgewock, ME.
New Balance also operates factories in Lawrence and Methuen, MA and in Norway, ME, and will open a plant in Londonderry, NH, this fall, the Boston Business Journal reported. All five produce athletic footwear and employ a total of 1,200 people. There’s also a New Balance footwear factory in the U.K.
“U.S. manufacturing has always been at the core of our company culture,” said New Balance president and CEO Joe Preston. “We believe that when we think global but act local, we can better serve the local communities where our associates live and work.”
