Ahead of the Motorola Razr Fold launch later this Summer, Motorola already has a sizeable chunk of the foldable market in the US. According to IDC, Motorola has about 50% of the foldable market, and that’s just from selling flip phones.
A big reason for Motorola doing so well with foldables in the US is likely the nostalgia factor with the Razr name. But also the fact that Motorola does have a significantly cheaper option, compared to Samsung. The base model Razr sells for $699, and it’s often on sale for even less than that.
It’s a little surprising to see Motorola having a bigger share of the market than Samsung, especially since Google has a nice chunk of the foldable market as well. OnePlus likely still has a few percentage points from its Open a few years ago, too.
Motorola isn’t just outperforming in the US either
The good news doesn’t stop in the US either. Motorola has around 55% of the market in Latin America. That’s a market that has been a huge focus point for Motorola since Lenovo took over the company. So this doesn’t come as a huge surprise.
Over in Europe, this does drop down to 13%. Which is still not bad at all, considering the competition over there from HONOR, vivo, Xiaomi, and others.
This is all very interesting and likely to change later this year with Apple’s foldable. Apple is rumored to be launching its own book-style foldable this Fall as its ‘One More Thing’ at the iPhone event. Which is why we’re seeing almost every foldable maker opt for a much wider front display now. As that is what Apple is rumored to be doing this year. Similar to the Google Pixel Fold and the OPPO Find N2. It’ll be interesting to see how the Razr Fold stacks up to the competition when it launches in a few months.
