Popular tech YouTuber MKBHD’s Panel app, a popular destination for curated smartphone wallpapers, is officially shutting down. This comes after the app had a period of growth, experimentation, and community engagement. The creator says that the decision follows internal changes within the development team and a reassessment of long-term goals. The shutdown marks the end of an ambitious project.
MKBHD’s Panel app is officially shutting down
The Panels app had a very vibrant launch. However, it was criticized by a few for its high subscription prices. But regardless, the app emerged as an answer to a familiar question directed at MKBHD: which wallpaper he used in his videos. This simple question made the creator develop the platform, which quickly grew into a broader platform designed to support artists and enrich the wallpaper ecosystem.
At launch in September 2024, the Panels app secured the top position in the Photos category on both Google Play Store and Apple App Store. It recorded over two million downloads. The app was widely regarded for its clean design, curated wallpaper picks, and a community-focused approach. But after all this, the app is going to be shut down forever.
A community project comes to a close
Marques Brownlee announced that Panels is shutting down at the end of this month. Users who relied on the app for curated wallpapers will now see its features phased out. However, locally saved wallpapers will remain safe. All user data is set to be deleted afterwards. Active subscribers will automatically receive pro-rated refunds. The manual refund requests will remain available.
The decision to sunset the Panels app is attributed to internal developments. The project’s makeup changed earlier this year. This prompted the creator to search for collaborators who shared the same passion and vision for the platform. When that effort did not yield the right fit, the team chose a clean and responsible conclusion rather than continuing without a clear path. Once the shutdown and refund process is complete, the Panels code will be released under the Apache 2.0 license. This will allow developers to build on the foundation laid during its active period.
