I recently purchased one of their cat collars for my Domestic Shorthair, Makoa. This big boy was in definite need of a fashion upgrade, and Mimi Green delivered. Our Experience
My cat, Makoa, was long overdue for a collar upgrade. I loved the idea of ordering from Mimi Green because they are a family-owned business that custom makes all their pet products by hand right here in the USA. The fact that they have been in business for almost twenty years is another major plus in my book.
I chose their laminated cotton cat collar because I liked many of the pattern options and thought it might be a bit more durable and longer-lasting than a traditional ribbon and nylon collar.
This collar comes in two sizes, one for cats with necks 6 to 10 inches around, and one for cats with necks 9 to 13 inches. Makoa, who weighs about 12 pounds, has a 9 ½ inch neck, so I decided to size up to the “Big Cat” collar.
I chose the Lark print, which features a teal, green, black, and white floral pattern. (While the selection images on the laptop browser page are a bit distorted and fuzzy, I can assure you that the actual collar is clean and beautiful.)
I also chose to get Makoa’s short name, “Koa,” engraved on the buckle. In hindsight, I wish I had added an address and phone number just to see if so much text would have been legible on such a tiny buckle.
As soon as I received the collar, I put it on Makoa and let him flaunt it.
What I Liked
I found a lot to like about this collar. It is well made, sewn with care, and narrow enough to be comfortable on a cat’s neck. I also love:
- How vibrant the collars are
- The engraving on the buckle
- The inclusion of a break-away-release buckle for safety
- The size (sizing up was definitely the right call for my chonky boy)
The laminated cotton is another feature I have really come to like. Unlike standard ribbon and nylon collars, the ribbon on this one is shiny, as you might expect. This gives it a bit of extra vibrance, but it also adds to its durability.
Because of the lamination, the ribbon material does not easily get wet or snagged. The lamination also protects against color fading. So not only is this durable collar going to last longer, but it is going to look great for years.
Another unique aspect of this collar is that it does not have a D-ring. Instead, it has a split ring embedded between the nylon layers. This allows you to twist your cat’s tag directly onto the ring, which means it doesn’t hang as low as a D-ring-plus-split-ring setup (which is what you normally get with pet collars).
I like this because it keeps Makoa’s tag from getting in his water bowl and food, and it means it’s less likely to get snagged and ripped off.
Where I Saw Room for Improvement
I didn’t find much not to like about this collar, other than some nitpicky and personal preference things.
It doesn’t come with a bell, which is a bummer since Makoa’s bell is so old it’s lost its original color. And, while I like the split ring design, having the ring so close to the collar does prevent the bell from ringing as readily as it used to. So while I keep his tag on the embedded split ring, I ended up adding another split ring to hang the bell from.
I would have also loved more patterns and colors to choose from in this laminate option.
Overall, though, I have been very happy with this collar. It is well-made, feels very durable, and Makoa looks fantastic in it.

Other than a Mimi Green’s vendor account on Etsy, I couldn’t find any other pet collar companies that make laminated cat collars. This is a shame, in my opinion, because these collars offer some very unique advantages.
For one, the laminated coating over the ribbon helps protect it. Not only does it repel water to help keep your cat’s collar dryer (which means less odor and less wear), but it also makes the ribbon more durable.
With the lamination, the ribbon won’t fray along the edges and is much less likely to get snagged or torn as your kitty explores. The plastic coating acts like a clear shield to protect your cat’s collar and increase its longevity—great for owners who plan to keep their cat’s collar for years once they find the perfect one.
The lamination also really helps the color pop. Plus, it protects the fabric from fading and is super easy to clean. Just wipe it down with a damp rag to remove mud and dust and keep the collar looking as vibrant as it did on day one.
