When you think about how AI can and will be implemented in games, you might not have thought about its capabilities to coach you and help you improve your skills, but that seems to be just one of the features of Microsoft’s new Copilot for Gaming. Today on the Official Xbox podcast, Xbox Corporate Vice President of Gaming AI, Fatima Kardar, introduced the new Copilot for Gaming tool.
Among its handful of features is its ability to help you “get good” through the use of coaching tactics. It can also help you save time by reminding you where you left off on a game you haven’t played in a while. Kardar also notes that it can help you stay connected with friends. The goal of this new feature is to provide a seamless and more personalized experience while playing games on Xbox.
The single goal is “to help you to get to play first,” Kardar says, referencing one of Copilot for Gaming’s initiatives of helping you manage your time better. The team hopes that with Copilot for Gaming, players can spend more time playing games instead of searching and downloading.
Copilot for Gaming will get an in-game assistance feature
It’s not immediately clear how the assistance feature would work in its entirety, but Kardar does give an example during the podcast. The Xbox team also outlines this example in its official blog post. Essentially, players would be able to get situation-specific advice on overcoming a certain challenge. In such a scenario, a player could have considerable trouble beating a boss. They could ask Copilot For Gaming how to beat this boss, and then it could respond by asking if the player would like it to pull up a guide.
Another example given shows a player asking what to do with some wood they gathered in Minecraft. To which the Copilot responds by saying they can craft oak logs with it.
This works far differently than the tips you get on PS5. The end result, though, is the same. You, as the player, are having trouble with something in a game. The tips, or in Xbox’s case, the new Copilot tool, can assist you with overcoming that difficult task. Whatever it may be.
In yet another example, Copilot is shown suggesting a character pick in Overwatch 2 based on team composition and past success on a particular map.
The feature is there when you need it and out of the way when you don’t
Another important factor in developing this feature was to make sure that it wasn’t in your face all the time. “It’s not just about AI showing up to help you, it’s about AI showing up at the right moment,” Kardar says. She continued by saying that Copilot for Gaming can’t be intrusive and that the team really had to think about the experience that they built.
To that end, players have full control of this feature and can engage with it any time, or not. Microsoft will be rolling this out to Xbox Insiders first, and it will initially be available on mobile only. Microsoft does plan to release it for other devices. In addition to Copiilot for Gaming, Microsoft has also launched an AI Chatbot for Xbox, so the company’s plans for AI in gaming are proceeding apace.
