Tech giant Meta, which owns Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, will test premium subscriptions that will offer its users access to exclusive features on its apps, the company told to TechCrunch. Like any subscription, this too will open doors to more productivity and creativity with expanded AI capabilities. This model will also help the firm generate more revenue.
Meta will test premium subscriptions on WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook
Meta will reportedly offer a premium experience on its apps, such as Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp. This will include giving users access to special features and more control over how they connect and share. However, the core experiences will remain free. It looks like there’s no fixed strategy at the moment, as the company says that it will test a range of subscription features and bundles. It notes that each app subscription will offer a distinct set of exclusive features.
Meta notes that it plans to scale Manus, an AI agent it recently acquired for reportedly $2 billion, as a part of its subscription plans. Interestingly, the company will apparently take a two-fold approach to Manus. It is going to integrate Manus into Meta products while continuing to sell standalone subscriptions to businesses. For what it’s worth, Meta seems to be working on adding a shortcut to Manus AI on Instagram, as spotted by reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi.
Meta is also reportedly planning to test a subscription for AI features, like Vibes video generation. Vibes is an AI-powered short-form video experience built into the Meta AI app. It lets users create and remix AI-generated videos. While this has been free since its launch last year, Meta wants to change that. There will apparently be an option to subscribe to unlock additional video creation opportunities each month.

These subscriptions will be separate from Verified
Circling back to the premium subscription to the app, it’s not clear what paid features will be available on WhatsApp and Facebook. As for Instagram, Paluzzi notes that the premium subscription might let users create unlimited audience lists. It could also include the ability to see the list of followers who don’t follow you back. And, possibly, an option to view a Story without the poster seeing that you viewed it.
These new subscriptions will be separate from Meta Verified. The company apparently says that it’s going to use the findings from Meta Verified to improve its subscription business. This will help the company offer what everyday users, creators, and businesses want. Meta also notes that it will listen to community users and gather feedback as it rolls out subscriptions in the coming months.
Considering the increasing number of subscriptions per month for end users, Meta needs to serve something compelling to get users to sign up. Snap has proved that there is a market for social media subscriptions to tap. Snapchat+ continues to be a revenue driver, where the plan starts at $3.99 per month for exclusive features.
