
AI-generated content becomes more convincing and easier to produce. And, it seems social media platforms are struggling to keep pace. Meta recently received a pointed assessment from its own Oversight Board, which concluded that the company’s current methods for detecting AI deepfakes are simply not enough. The board, which operates as a semi-independent body to guide moderation practices, warned that the existing system lacks the depth and speed required to handle the modern reality of online misinformation.
Where Meta failed
The investigation centered on an AI-generated video that falsely depicted building damage in Israel. This content spread across Facebook, Instagram, and Threads before being caught. Meta’s Oversight Board says that this is especially dangerous during armed conflicts when people use social media to get real-time news.
One major issue the board identified is Meta’s over-reliance on self-disclosure. Right now, the system mostly relies on creators to admit they use AI or on industry standards like C2PA. The latter works by embedding metadata into digital files. However, most deceptive content does not come with these helpful markers. The board noted that even Meta’s own AI tools are inconsistently labeled. This creates a confusing environment for the average user trying to distinguish fact from fiction.
Oversight Board calls for major overhaul of Meta’s deepfake AI detection
The board’s recommendations suggest a complete overhaul of synthetic media handling. They want Meta to change its approach to one that is more proactive than reactive. This would involve developing more sophisticated internal tools that can flag “High-Risk AI” content without waiting for a user to report it. They also want to see a new, dedicated community standard specifically for AI-generated media to replace the current patchwork of rules.
Speed is the critical factor here. In the middle of a conflict, a fake video can go viral and reach millions of people in a matter of hours. By the time a human moderator reviews it or a fact-checker issues a correction, the media content already shaped the narrative. The oversight body argued that Meta must prioritize transparency regarding its penalties for policy violations and ensure that labels are clearly visible to everyone scrolling through their feeds.
While the recommendations of the Oversight Board are not technically binding, they carry significant weight. Meta now must decide how much to invest in the authenticity of its platforms.
