Developing an AI model from scratch isn’t easy. AI is a resource-intensive technology, which means that only companies with the money can access the necessary hardware used to develop it. Development can also take a while. This is why it’s not surprising to learn that at some point in time, Meta considered buying Perplexity and other AI companies to boost its efforts.
Meta wanted to buy Perplexity
According to a report from The Verge, the publication claims that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg discussed buying Perplexity AI at one point in time. However, this wasn’t his only plan. The report also claims that Zuckerberg was interested in ex-OpenAI CEO Mira Murati’s Thinking Machine Labs.
Unfortunately, it seems that the discussions didn’t go any further. A Bloomberg report claims that neither discussion reached the formal stage. Apparently, this was due to differences in strategy and valuation.
However, since then, Meta has switched targets. The company recently invested a staggering $14.3 billion in Scale AI and is bringing its co-founder Alexandr Wang into the fold. That being said, Meta isn’t alone in wanting to bring Perplexity under its umbrella.
Everyone wants a piece of Perplexity
According to the rumors, Apple is apparently interested in Perplexity and could be looking to acquire the AI company. In Apple’s case, it makes sense. Apple’s efforts on Apple Intelligence has been subpar at best. It can barely handle the most basic of tasks. And for more complicated tasks? It hands it over to OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Given Apple’s preference for keeping everything in-house, buying Perplexity and leveraging its technology would go a long way in helping Apple achieve its AI goals. However, it’s only a rumor for now.
Samsung is also reportedly interested in Perplexity. However, instead of buying them outright, the reports suggest that Samsung might be looking to make an investment. The company already has some kind of partnership with the AI company, where eligible Galaxy owners can claim a free subscription to Perplexity Pro.
However, tipster Ice Universe shared their opinion on X, suggesting that Samsung could actually buy Perplexity before Apple does. Whether or not that happens remains to be seen, but based on all we’ve heard so far, Perplexity is shaping up to be a hot commodity.
